FLY THROUGH AND ANIMATIONS

FOLLY
THE FOLLY IS A HYBRID BETWEEN BUILT AND NATURAL FORM. FROM WITHIN THE ELEVATOR, STUDENTS AND THE DEAN WITNESS THE DECOMPOSING SCHOOL GIVE A SECOND LIFE TO THE ARID LANDSCAPE.

BRIDGE
STUDENTS ARE FORCED INTO AN INTERACTION UPON WAITING FOR THE BRIDGE TO CONNECT THEIR PRIVATE HOUSING TO THE COLLABORATIVE SCHOOL. THIS LEADS TO A MUTUAL INSPIRATION THAT EXPANDS ON THE STUDENTS' IDEAS ON HABITATION RELATIONSHIPS.

HOUSING
THE CONSTANTLY CHANGING VIEWS CREATED BY ROTATIONAL MOVEMENTS THROUGH OUT THE DAY AND NIGHT ALLOW THE STUDENTS TO GAIN NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THEIR INTERACTION WITH THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT.

NOTE
THE COMPUTOR LABORATORIES, RESEARCH OFFICE AND MEETING AREAS ARE NOT SHOWN IN THE FLY THOUGH. THEY ARE AS DETAILED IN CONCEPT SKETCHES AND ARE ALSO INDICATED ON THE LUMION ENVIRONMENT DOWNLOAD.

Concept Sketches

I've been meaning to scan these in for a while. A few sketches of the school based off Herzog and de Meuron's House for a New Media Collector.
Initial concepts are on the left while a refined version that I will be continuing on with is on the right, over layed on the original floor plan.

Draft Lumion

A whole lot of shots from a first proper play with Lumion. Still needs plenty of work and figuring out how certain spaces will be utilised.

Bridge Animation

Finaly got Lumion's animation to work how I needed it. Also decided it was time to try and learn 3DS. Came up with this draft of my bridge.

Moving Component Test

I'm hoping to make my entire bridge the moving component, acting as a telescopic extension from the school. Still playing around with the actual animation effect.

Final Model

Just leaving these here for backup because I almost just lost everything...

Elecroliquid Aggregation Update

I initially preferred the concept it self of Gang as a pioneer for women in architecture however I chose to develop the 'thrilling and beautiful form' one instead. I had a few ideas to incorporate into my final design so have adjusted my electroliquid aggregation to fit.

Textures

I'm not sure if Russell was intentionally hinting at it, but after his lecture I couldn't get the idea of using a gif for the 36 textures out of my head. Here's the result:

And a youtube version if the gif doesn't work. Go full screen and adjust to HD to see the actual detail:

Thursday 24 April 2014

After re-reading the weekly task I wasn't sure whether we were meant to develop the models as a connected unit or as two individuals, so I figured I'd do both. In each I'm playing on the monuments as 'immortal barriers', being difficult to approach and interact with.
As far as colour and texture goes I was too lazy to put much thought into so just went with black and white to easily distinguish the two, however I like how it turned out as the white suits the 'practical and simple' form (created from extrusions of perfect squares) and the black plays along with the immortality and indestructible aspect.

From Sketch to Model

The final model was a combination of two original sketches.

Heston's above ground component was modeled from the word 'juxtaposition'.

Revival Cycles' underground workshop was inspired by the word 'stare'.

Original sketch for Heston stairs above the datum.

Original sketch for Revival stairs below the datum.

The final section incorporates a juxtaposition of materials in the building above the datum, the aluminium contrasts with the grass in the way that Heston's cooking contrasts with elements of science. Also the structure its self, while looking organic from a distance, blending into the surrounding hills with natural curves, is actually made up of a series of horizontal geometric sections.
A passage stares through from below the datum, allowing a beam of light to fall onto the bike as it ascends on the combined lift/bench top as if being raised from the dead.

While three custom textures were originally used, these were refined down to two.

'Raw' - Used to represent the concrete left raw after casting to construct the walls of Revival's workshop.

'Tempered' - Coloured to further demonstrate the desired material; coreten steel used for Revival's stair, workshop container and workbench. The intentional rusted finish which is still perfectly usable and structural, is a notion to the restored bikes which may show age but still have purpose.

Final Images

The entire building becomes Heston's stair, reflecting his need for a grand entrance and epic presentation.

The staircase for Revival Cycles leads from underground, lit by five slits cut through the raw concrete wall. The motorbike ascends and is given new life.

A negative space is created to allow for the insertion of Revival Cycles' existing shipping container which holds large machining tools.

Revival's stair rises in two flights from the underground workshop to the shared display room.

The sky light in Heston's kitchen, punching through the layered aluminium and earth, continues all the way down to Revival's underground workshop, aligning with the lift/work bench that brings the completed motorbike up.
